“Through the incorporation of semiotic elements and her body of work, “Illusion of home, as a memory,” Nicole Economides explores feelings of nostalgia, home, and the quest for one’s identity while traversing the Atlantic bidirectionally. Her artistic practice sheds light on the intersections of memory, migration, and identity, delving into both personal experiences and cultural signifiers. It presents a nuanced reflection on the impact of economic migration on individual and collective identities, exploring the intricate interplay of language and culture in shaping distinct experiences of belonging.

[...] the artist herself, Economides, meticulously preparing stuffed green peppers in her studio. This recipe, a Pontiac twist on her grandfather's family tradition, embodies a legacy passed down through generations of women. Traditionally, mastering this dish signified a bride's assimilation into her husband's family, a surrender of her own heritage. Here, however, Economides reclaims the act. As her hands work with practiced ease, the viewer's gaze might linger on the traditional associations – motherhood, domesticity, care. Yet, within the starkness of the studio, the act transforms. It becomes a powerful statement of identity. Economides simply cooks, not as a wife or symbol, but as an artist, a woman, a Greek-American, defying expectations and rewriting the narrative through this act of culinary heritage.”
